As we’ve mentioned recently, we will be starting a monthly team leadership meeting to discuss ideas and direction for our team. Reporting from the Third Annual Encaustic Painting Conference – Encaustic Sculpture

When I hear the word “encaustic,” my mind immediately jumps to paintings. That is why, until attending the Third Annual Encaustic Painting Conference this June, I had not often looked for, or even paid attention to, sculpture as a medium for the use of encaustic. At the conference I had the pleasure of attending an encaustic sculpture talk by Kim Bernard, who also showed her work at the conference.

Kim covered the work of nine artists. I will share a small sampling of these, hopefully demonstrating the range of encaustic as a sculpting medium.

First up is my personal favorite, Martin Kline. I am mesmerized by his ability to continue such an organic form as wood and do it in such an unexpected way with startlingly bright colors. Be sure to check out more of his work.

Sylvia Netzer creates impressively large encaustic sculptures such as this one.

Glen Gary OLY, 29 x 83 x 31

Laura Moriarty has a very interesting technique. She first builds up layers and layers of wax and color on wood, then scrapes the entire thing off and reshapes the wax into beautiful formations.

1. Conference video: If you haven’t had a chance to see our conference video (created especially for the BEE team!), you’ll find it on the front page of our site, or by clicking here. This will give you a good glimpse into what the Third Annual Encaustic Conference was like. We hope you enjoy it!

2. Object Challenge: For those of you participating, if you haven’t sent off your item, please do so ASAP! We’re looking forward to seeing the results of the Object Challenge in the next few weeks. If you have any questions about the Object Challenge, feel free to email them to info@beeswaxteam.com (subject line: Object Challenge).

3. One A Day project: There’s still a week left to join us for the One A Day project (where we create a piece of art once a day for a minimum of 2 weeks, then blog about it each day) We are aiming to begin June 29th, but welcome anyone to join us as soon as possible! 4. Team Forum: New questions and discussion threads are going in the Team Forum. If you haven’t begun contributing, we’d love for you to jump in and give us your insight! This week’s poll question is for encaustic artists: Which heating tool do you prefer and why?

1) Team newsletter was sent out last week. In it, were details on the new team member requirements. If you didn’t get a copy, please let us know ASAP! Contact Shannon (writeshans [at] gmail [dot] com). Requirements should be reviewed and taken effect immediately. We will begin distinguishing between active and passive members, starting June 17th.
